The question or challenge for Kurdistan and Iraq is to regain and reform its arable land, revive forgotten knowledge on farming and agriculture and take the opportunity to gain the position as a real exporter of crops. The intentions are to contribute to a modernization of the Kurdish and Iraqi societies. The spearhead in this ambition is the agriculture, which has both an historical and contemporary connection:
• First, as the fertile land between Euphrates and Tigris, and
• Secondly, of being the only current manufacturing industry Iraq and Kurdistan have.
On top of this, Kurdistan and Iraq can export these homemade products. This will be achieved by promoting and supporting farmers, industry- and agriculture investors. The belief is that the road to a modern, independent and business oriented farming industry in Kurdistan and Iraq will lead/go through current farmers and farming enterprises’ success.
Historically the Middle East was in the centre of the early domestication of crops and live stock animals. The Middle East was in the midst of the Fertile Crescent, where the transition to an agricultural society started. The foodstuff production mostly spread from the Fertile Crescent to the North, East, and West, and it would not be far to think that knowledge, know-how, and technique were spreading in similar ways.
These historical circumstances will provide fertile ground for inspiration to profoundly modernize farming and increase the output of the agricultural produce tremendously. Iraq imports provisions and foodstuff at a yearly cost of $3 billion. Just to peel off or scratch the surface of this would provide/generate enough funding and financing to modernize the agricultural sector and start a farming industry – the long awaited for Iraqi and Kurdish manufacturing industry.
